NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Unemployment increased throughout the world in 2010, but so did PBX and IP PBX sales. Purchases of business phone systems jumped 16% in North America and 14% worldwide to $59 billion. Unemployment according to the OECD was 8.5% in 2010 up from 6.1% in 2008.
Almost 40% of PBX and IP PBX sales were to businesses wanting to increase employee productivity, which was the largest catalyst driving 2010 sales, according to an Eastern Management Group survey of more than a thousand IT managers.
Averaging $1200 per phone, buyers made PBX and IP PBX purchases either expecting or following reductions in operating budgets. Unlike older phone systems, new PBX and IP PBX systems are capable of boldly reducing operating expenses and improving employee productivity.
Of the world’s 12 largest PBX and IP PBX companies, nine increased sales in 2010, including Alcatel-Lucent, Mitel and ShoreTel. Each of the 12 sells PBX and IP PBX systems that deliver or support unified communications and collaboration.
Unified communications is technology that improves employee productivity and reduces operating expenses. UC&C lets employees work at home, share telephone features with colleagues around the world, communicate over multiple devices, or in industry parlance “collaborate.”
Despite the economy, global PBX purchases should continue to show resiliency according to The Eastern Management Group. Customer surveys show a PBX upgrade cycle for businesses that could last for years has just begun.
